May restoration update – two sides to every tale?

The scaffolding is down on one half of the frontage but the other half remains untouched, so the building has a split personality right now – one side new and smooth, the other side peeling and bumpy! Unusually, the original tiles on the frontage have been plastered over. Wonder what the hooks are for?

Can’t wait to see the whole frontage finished and re painted along with the newly sealed side walls and repaired canopy.  Top marks Mr Building Owner.

All change

I’m also pleased to say that some serious repairs have been happening to the buildings exterior over the last few weeks. Here are some pictures.

1970s

After the main frontage was removed in the 70s in preperation for the Chester Road widening. Houses and businesses along this route were subject to compulsory purchase orders with only the Essoldo and church surving whilst having to surrender the land around the front. There is also a section of business premises yet to be built on the corner. The building looks a little lost!

Family memories / Family Business

These family photos have kindly been provided by Linda Thompson / nee Moss, whose father Robert was the last manager of the Essoldo whilst it was a cinema. Her mum used to run the cafe and they all used to live in one of the flats on the side of the building! Linda’s brother followed suit, working his way through various cinemas, ending up as assistant manager of the Essoldo then buying the Curzon. If you have any of your own photos or remeber anyone in the photos, let us know!
