Landmark Competition – vote Essoldo!

Vote for us  – please!

Is Stretford’s Essoldo cinema the best thing about Chester Road? Does Altrincham Market deserve more recognition for its 700 year history? Or do you prefer the views from green spots like Dunham Massey, Walkden Gardens or Davyhulme Park? Whatever you think is the most iconic landmark, your Advertiser wants to hear from you.

Our editor Paul Harrison explained: “We would like to hear from you the readers about the places dear to you.

“It could be an eye-catching building, your favourite park, a clock tower which you can always rely on to tell you the time or a sculpture that makes your town centre stand out.

“We want to incorporate the most popular images in the masthead of our two newspapers – the Sale and Altrincham Advertiser and the Stretford and Urmston Advertiser.

“Once we have a shortlist we can put the finalists out to a public vote.”

If you have a suggestion you can email us at news@myadvertiser.co.uk.

Please put ‘Stretford and Urmston landmark’ or ‘Sale and Altrincham’ landmark in the subject field. Or you can write to us at ‘Landmark’, The Advertiser (Stretford and Urmston or Sale and Altrincham) at Mitchell Henry House, Hollinwood Avenue, Chadderton, OL9 8EF.

November update

Work seems to have come to a standstill again outside. I do hope the remainder of the exterior is done before the really bad weather sets in. Still, it’s in much better shape than last year.

The video page has an extra video now, the Channel M report from last year. And for somne reason, all my menu items have moved about – any experts on WordPress out there?

August renovations: Looking good

The building is begning to look quite sturdy again. The re plastering of the frontage seems to be complete now and the that area of the building looks water tights and much more presentable. Lets hope there will be a paint job before the winter sets in. Will they go for the same colours?

Essoldo Stretford goes virtual in FourSquare!

The Longford Essoldo Cinema is now available to visit in the virtual world of FourSquare! If you are a FourSqaure user, click here to view the venue and check in.

Plaster and more plaster

Another month, another photo. Whilst not appearing to proceed with such gusto, more fixing and patching seems to be appearing on the buildings frontage.

Repairs to July 2010

May restoration update – two sides to every tale?

The scaffolding is down on one half of the frontage but the other half remains untouched, so the building has a split personality right now – one side new and smooth, the other side peeling and bumpy! Unusually, the original tiles on the frontage have been plastered over. Wonder what the hooks are for?

Restoration of the building frontage seems to be under way!

Can’t wait to see the whole frontage finished and re painted along with the newly sealed side walls and repaired canopy.  Top marks Mr Building Owner.

Picture this!

I’ve had some enquiries relating to the picture in the last news paper article. I’ve emailed those in the picture and am told that future involvement of this group will proceed in a politically impartial stance after the election. Positive interest in the Longford Essoldo Cinema building on whatever level is always welcome.

What’s your vision for the buildings future usage?

Following last weeks newspaper item, there have been a record number of visitors to the site and I’ve had 8 requests for the owners details so they can put usage suggestions or offers of help to them. Unfortunately, the owner hasn’t put their details in the public domain and it isn’t ethical (or probably very legal) for me to do this so I don’t. I don’t have any contact with the owner but am aware that they or their associates may read this site from time to time.

What would be great is if anyone with ideas to comment on this post with your suggestions to the owner (as you never know who might be reading). Please do not post your phone number or address, only email contact if you really want to. If you have something very specific in mind (e.g. you are part of an organisation with interest), you can email me by clicking here and I will record your interest privately.
